Ceremony for the handing over of the renovated National Library
The handing over ceremony of the newly renovated National Library Building was witnessed earlier today, following an extensive renovation that started in February 2022. This year the National Library Building celebrated its 29th anniversary since it was opened on the 18th June 1994.
The National Library Building went through a substantial renovation of its exterior and a complete redesign of its interior.
The building now features more opened, light-filled space, dedicated areas for various services. The renovation project consisted of an improved ground floor which now will include dedicated services for the children section, a new computer lab for Information technology workshops and a newly renovated National Arts Gallery.
The former administrative space on the improved first floor will now accommodate adult and teen spaces.
In line with the strategic mandate of the Seychelles National Institute for Culture, Heritage and the Arts to ensure accessibility for all, particularly the less able users, a new elevator has been added to ensure access to the higher levels. In regards to the conservation aspects, a new Ventilation and Air Conditioning system has been installed to ensure that the appropriate temperature and humidity are controlled and maintained throughout the building. To guarantee the preservation of library documents, designated repository spaces have also been demarcated.
With the handing over of the now renovated National Library Building, work to set up these dedicated library services can now begin, and the National Library services are expected to be fully operational before the end of this year.
As the world of learning is very different today compared to a few years ago, the new National Library will soon resume to play its role in supporting these changes, by providing a vibrant, open and collaborative space, creating new possibilities to support learning.
